The 2022 Tyler Uslan Foundation Youth Fire Academy
Aug. 22, 2022 12:30 p.m.
Mikayla Stirling, The 2022 Tyler Uslan Foundation Youth Fire Academy
Hosted by club member, Joey Sanchez Zoom Link Information: For Zoom Guests: Please contact the Club IT committee to receive your invitation that includes the access code to our Monday Zoom meeting. Topic: Discussion on the Results of the 3rd Annual Tyler Uslan Foundation Youth Fire Academy. Bragging Rights!!! About the Speaker: Mikayla was raised in our community and now calls Walnut Grove home. While currently Mikayla is a Sacramento firefighter, she has dedicated much of her time to the Walnut Grove Volunteer Fire Department and the TUF Youth Fire Academy. In June, the TUF held its 3rd annual Youth Fire Academy for local kids ages 11-14. Along with the Founders Laura and Tom Uslan, Mikayla is an inspiration to those youths wanting to become firefighters when they grow up. Just like Tyler Uslan, whom the foundation is in honor of. Tyler dreamed every day of becoming a firefighter. It's everything he wanted to be. Those dreams are alive in the spirit of this academy. 30-35 kids each year experience a 3 day camp learning all about the fire station, firefighters, and how they serve the community. One can only imagine how many future firefighters there will be because of the TUF.

South County Services

Maria Rosales, Executive Director, from Sacramento County Services, Galt, CAHosted by club member, John Hospenthal Zoom Link Information: For Zoom Guests: Please contact the Club IT committee to receive your invitation that includes the access code to our Monday Zoom meeting. Topic: About the Speaker: Pictured in the image are: Miriam Oropeza, Gloria Rodriguez and Maria Rosales are keeping South County Services up and running. Rosales said people who need help aren’t usually able to travel all the way to Sacramento for services. This makes the Galt connection so important for those in need in our area. With the help of Gloria Rodriguez and Miriam Oropeza, this small service operation travels to Walnut Grove and Isleton every week to help those in need. “I love helping people,” Rosales said. “I grew up in Isleton where it’s very isolated – not many resources. I love working here. When I first found it, I knew I had found my passion.” Rosales said Raley’s has been wonderful to help with food donations. The service provider depends on not only government funds but also the generosity of Galt residents. “We accept donations of food, clothing and cash,” Rosales said. “Anything donated can be written off taxes. People can make such a big difference right here in their own community.” Rosales wants everyone to know that their doors are still open with a brown bag program once a month for low-income seniors and the disabled, eye examinations and glasses for a low cost of only $20, and notary services. For more information, call (209) 745-9174. Information above are exerpts from a Herald article written in 2020. |

About the Speakers: Excerpts and Information from the Official PatHume.com website: Pat grew up in Elk Grove and attended Kerr Middle School and Jesuit High School before receiving his BA from San Diego State University. After college, Pat moved back home to Sacramento County to help the family business following his grandfather’s death in 1998. A native Californian, Pat was born on George Air Force Base in Adelanto, CA. His family lived in Salisbury, England and Fort Walton Beach, Florida until his father, Col. Harlan B. Hume died during active duty in September of 1977. After the Col.’s death, Pat’s family returned to Elk Grove, where his mother’s side of the family had lived since 1946. His father served in the US AirForce and died in the line of duty when Pat was still in school. Pat’s grandfather Harry Hume was city manager in Chico from 1930-1950 and his mother’s family has had a strong presence in Sacramento County for over half a century. Pat is dedicated to veterans and has been a driving force behind the City’s Veteran and Public Safety Street Naming Program. Pat models his sense of character and integrity on his grandfather Jim Guttridge, who served on the EGUSD school board for over two decades and was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Elk Grove. Decades later, Pat would go on to serve as President of the same club. Pat and his wife Lisa are active in the community, including the Chamber of Commerce, Soroptimists, Project RIDE, Strauss Festival, EGACT, EGPAC and the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation – where Pat now serves as President.
