Jul 04, 2022 9:00 AM - 10:00 PM

Happy 4th of July,

Also called Independence Day, the Fourth (4th) of July is a Federal holiday in the USA that commemorates the adoption of the Declaraion of Independence. (Not to be confused by the movie).

On July 4th, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence, which had been written largely by Jefferson. Though the vote for actual independence took place on July 2nd, from then on the 4th became the day that was celebrated as the birth of American independence.

About the Speaker:

My name is Nicholas Domingo, a proud Rotarian from Twain Harte Rotary in District 5220. I am also the creator of the international youth program sensation, Captain Encouragement. I have always been drawn to the Rotary’s commitment to Service Above Self and our organization's capacity to make a difference in communities. My work with Captain Encouragement has inspired me to embark on a new mission–to bring exciting content to kids of all ages. This led to the birth of Happy Hive Studios & Productions.

My team at Happy Hive shares the Rotary philosophy in efforts to create lasting change. We have worked hard to partner with brilliant minds around the globe to create books, comics, videos, games and more! Our goal is to present educational, interactive, engaging content on important issues. These topics include:

  • Mental health
  • Trauma and loss
  • Healthy eating and nutrition
  • Physical fitness and wellbeing
  • Hygiene
  • And so much more!

We are excited to announce that we are touring Rotary clubs, schools, libraries, churches, and other community groups. We want to showcase all the exciting work we are doing, but we also want to gain support in our mission to positively impact more communities.

We can’t wait to get started!

Topic:

Discussion on the Results of the 3rd Annual Tyler Uslan Foundation Youth Fire Academy.  Bragging Rights!!!

About the Speaker:

Mikayla was raised in our community and now calls Walnut Grove home.  While currently Mikayla is a Sacramento firefighter, she has dedicated much of her time to the Walnut Grove Volunteer Fire Department and the TUF Youth Fire Academy.  In June, the TUF held its 3rd annual Youth Fire Academy for local kids ages 11-14.  Along with the Founders Laura and Tom Uslan, Mikayla is an inspiration to those youths wanting to become firefighters when they grow up.  Just like Tyler Uslan, whom the foundation is in honor of.  Tyler dreamed every day of becoming a firefighter.  It's everything he wanted to be.  Those dreams are alive in the spirit of this academy.  30-35 kids each year experience a 3 day camp learning all about the fire station, firefighters, and how they serve the community.  One can only imagine how many future firefighters there will be because of the TUF.

South County Resources

About the Speaker:

Pictured in the image are: Miriam Oropeza, Gloria Rodriguez and Maria Rosales are keeping South County Services up and running.

Rosales said people who need help aren’t usually able to travel all the way to Sacramento for services. This makes the Galt connection so important for those in need in our area. With the help of Gloria Rodriguez and Miriam Oropeza, this small service operation travels to Walnut Grove and Isleton every week to help those in need.

“I love helping people,” Rosales said. “I grew up in Isleton where it’s very isolated – not many resources. I love working here. When I first found it, I knew I had found my passion.”

Rosales said Raley’s has been wonderful to help with food donations. The service provider depends on not only government funds but also the generosity of Galt residents.

“We accept donations of food, clothing and cash,” Rosales said. “Anything donated can be written off taxes. People can make such a big difference right here in their own community.”  Rosales wants everyone to know that their doors are still open with a brown bag program once a month for low-income seniors and the disabled, eye examinations and glasses for a low cost of only $20, and notary services. For more information, call (209) 745-9174.

About the Speaker:

Welcome to Rotary District 5180 where over 1600 Rotarians throughout the greater Sacramento region serve our communities both locally and around the world.

We are “People of Action” who see a need and act on it. We are friends who enjoy getting together to raise funds for our service projects and to celebrate our successes.

Our primary focus during this Rotary year is on basic needs... food, water and shelter. And, our theme is “Serve It Up.”

We work to ensure food security for families and the elderly in our communities. We provide clean water throughout the world. We work to shelter those in crisis in partnership with ShelterBox.

We hope you will join us as we come together to serve our communities.

Pat's Vision for the Delta

Oct 17, 2022

Pat Hume

Hosted by club member, Emily Pappalardo
This is a Hybrid Meeting. Both In-Person and Zoom.  Our guest speaker will be attending LIVE.

Topic - Pat's Vision for the Delta:

Pat Hume is running for County Supervisor to restore the County's commitment to safer neighborhoods, push to help businesses and jobs recover from the pandemic shutdowns, create a new approach to solving homeless problems, and fix local roads to reduce traffic impacts.

About the Speakers:

Excerpts and Information from the Official PatHume.com website:

Pat grew up in Elk Grove and attended Kerr Middle School and Jesuit High School before receiving his BA from San Diego State University. After college, Pat moved back home to Sacramento County to help the family business following his grandfather’s death in 1998.

A native Californian, Pat was born on George Air Force Base in Adelanto, CA. His family lived in Salisbury, England and Fort Walton Beach, Florida until his father, Col. Harlan B. Hume died during active duty in September of 1977.  After the Col.’s death, Pat’s family returned to Elk Grove, where his mother’s side of the family had lived since 1946.

His father served in the US AirForce and died in the line of duty when Pat was still in school.  Pat’s grandfather Harry Hume was city manager in Chico from 1930-1950 and his mother’s family has had a strong presence in Sacramento County for over half a century.  Pat is dedicated to veterans and has been a driving force behind the City’s Veteran and Public Safety Street Naming Program.

Pat models his sense of character and integrity on his grandfather Jim Guttridge, who served on the EGUSD school board for over two decades and was a charter member of the Rotary Club of Elk Grove. Decades later, Pat would go on to serve as President of the same club.

Pat and his wife Lisa are active in the community, including the Chamber of Commerce, Soroptimists, Project RIDE, Strauss Festival, EGACT, EGPAC and the Elk Grove Regional Scholarship Foundation – where Pat now serves as President. Pat chaired the extremely successful Spotlight Elk Grove and serves as a pro-bono auctioneer for groups like the Food Bank, Chicks in Crisis, and the Teen Center.

Local Commitment. Regional Leadership.
Pat served on the City of Elk Grove Planning Commission from incorporation until he was elected to the City Council in 2006.  He has been overwhelmingly re-elected four times.  His work on regional boards, including Regional Transit, Capital Southeast Connector Joint Powers Authority and LAFCO (Local Agency Formation Commission) has earned Hume the reputation as one of the area’s leading voices on transit and development.

Rotary World Polio Day - Become a PolioPlus Member
Oct 24, 2022 12:01 AM - 11:59 PM

Rotary’s Legacy in the Effort to Eradicate Polio Worldwide
- End Polio Now

Today, Rotarians worldwide continue to work through our polio networks to eradicate polio.

UPDATE 2022:  After nearly reaching our goal last year when only 2 cases of polio were reported, however recent news is that polio is being detected around the world in places where it hasn't been found in decades, including the United states.  27 wild cases in the world.  2 in Afghanistan, 19 in Pakistan, and 6 in Mozambique.  It only takes a minute or two to be a part of a world solution.  Vaccines have been deployed to stop outbreaks.  At this time, please consider joining the PolioPlus Society by October 24, by submitting a commitment form to contribute at least $100/year until polio is eradicated.

UPDATE 2020:  We’re committed to service, and we’re not afraid to dream big and set bold goals.  We began our fight against polio in 1979 with a project to immunize 6 million children in the Philippines.  Today, polio remains endemic in only three countries—down from 125 in 1988.  As recently as July 2020, Nigeria has been certified Polo Free.  In August of 2020, End Polio Now announced that only 85 cases remain worldwide.  29 in Afghanistan and 56 in Pakistan.  Reaching last year’s commitment means The Gates Foundation then matched donations 2-1, which in turn, the Rotary Foundation matched.

Join PolioPlus Today

At this time, please consider joining the PolioPlus Society by October 24,

by submitting a commitment form to contribute at least $100/year until polio is eradicated.
